Former captain of the Nigeria U20 female football team Ifeanyi Chiejine is dead.

According to a statement released today by the Nigeria Football Federation NFF, Chiejine died after a brief illness on Wednesday August 21st.

The midfielder captained the first Nigerian team to the then U19 which is now known as U-20, to the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2002.

Chiejine played for Nigeria Women Football League clubs like Pelican Stars, Flying Babes FC, Confluence Queens and FCT Queens and later moved abroad where she played for FC Indiana in USA’s W-League, KMF Kuopio and PK-35 Vantaa in Finland and Zvezda Perm in Russia.

She was part of the Nigerian squad that went to the 1999, 2003 and 2007 editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She was also the youngest player at the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup in USA.

She was also part of the Olympic female football team that went to the Olympics in 2000 and 2008.

During her time in the Nigeria team she scored 15 goals in 61 games.
